In a world defined by accelerating disruptions—geopolitical rivalries, energy crises, trade instability, technological vulnerabilities—economic security has emerged as a decisive pillar of national and global resilience. From inflation shocks to fragile supply chains and digital finance revolutions, the stability of global economies now rests on the ability to adapt and secure vital economic systems.
Recognizing the urgent need to empower future leaders in this evolving landscape, the Centre for International Political Economy (CIPE), in collaboration with Istanbul University and the Department of Economics, is organizing the Young Economic Security Forum (YES-Forum) at Rectoral Building. The Forum will serve as a platform where young scholars, professionals, and thought leaders engage in dialogue, learning, and solution-building around the future of economic security. Situated at the crossroads of East and West, Istanbul provides the ideal backdrop for critical discussions on forging resilient, inclusive, and sustainable economic futures.
Imagine you are showcasing your ideas at the Royal Rectorate Building of Istanbul University, one of the most historic and architecturally resplendent venues in Türkiye. Here is a royal-style description followed by some intriguing facts about the venue:
The Istanbul University Rectorate Building was formerly part of the Ottoman Harbiye Nezareti (Ministry of War) during the late Ottoman period.
After the Republic was established, it became home to the Istanbul University Rectorate, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world (officially founded in 1453, the same year as the conquest of Constantinople).
Unpacking the multidimensional concept of economic security, we delve into the emerging risks and resilience strategies shaping today’s interconnected world. From geopolitical instability to technological shifts, understanding the breadth and depth of economic security is vital for building adaptive systems and policies that can withstand ongoing disruptions.
In the context of global challenges, navigating agriculture, trade disruptions, and climate-induced hunger risks becomes increasingly urgent. Promoting youth-led innovations presents a powerful avenue for developing sustainable and secure food systems that address both immediate needs and long-term resilience.
The vulnerabilities of global financial systems, including inflation, sovereign debt, and the rise of digital currencies, demand critical examination. Developing robust strategies for financial resilience and systemic protection will be key to ensuring stability in the face of economic shocks and digital transformation.
As technologies evolve, blockchain, decentralized finance (DeFi), and new models of economic governance emerge at the forefront. This rapidly changing ecosystem presents both digital vulnerabilities and opportunities, requiring a deeper understanding of how these tools can be harnessed responsibly.
Beyond finance and trade, sectors like tourism, education, and cultural exchange act as powerful engines of economic resilience. In this regard, Istanbul serves as a case study, uniquely positioned to illustrate how North-South cultural and economic bridges can foster mutual growth and stability.
The rise of economic warfare, the weaponization of trade, and the urgency of securing global supply chains are redefining international relations. Through real-world case studies and youth-led solutions, we explore innovative approaches to rebuilding and stabilizing disrupted economies.
